The average man in the Arccos data hits the driver 224.1 yards and the average woman 176.2. Both age and handicap move that number a lot: a man with a 30+ handicap in his 20s averages 193 yards, while a 0.0 to 4.9 man in his 70s averages 209. Find your age and handicap in the tables below.

Using itHow to find your row

Go down the left side to your handicap range, then across to your age (the columns are age decades, plus 15 to 19 for men). The number where they meet is the average distance for that group in yards.

A 55-year-old man with a 12 handicap reads the 10.0 to 14.9 row under 50s: 220 yards. A 45-year-old woman with a 17 handicap reads the 15.0 to 19.9 row under 40s: 182 yards.

If you sit between two decades, read both columns. The bottom row gives the average for the whole age group across handicaps: for men it falls from 240 at 15 to 19 to 190 in the 70s, and for women from 201 in the 20s to 158 in the 60s.

AccuracyFairways hit climb with age

Distance falls with age, but the share of fairways hit goes up. Men in their 20s hit 38% and men in their 70s hit 56%. Women in their 20s hit 46% and women in their 60s hit 63%.

Watch forCommon mistakes

Comparing it with a launch monitor carry number. These are total yards, carry plus roll, on tee shots hit on par 4s and 5s. A launch monitor in a fitting bay usually reports carry, so it will read shorter.

Treating one cell as a rule. A few neighbouring cells run backwards. Women in their 20s at 20.0 to 24.9 average 194 yards, above the 187 for 15.0 to 19.9. Read the direction of a row or column, not a single cell.

Ignoring elevation. Arccos does not adjust for it. Its example is a 10-handicap man: 220.5 yards under 100 feet of elevation and 239.7 yards at 5,000 feet and above.

Taking the average as the goal. These are averages for golfers who track their rounds with Arccos, not a target you have to hit.

FAQQuick answers

What is the average driving distance for a 50-year-old man?

Arccos puts men in their 50s at 219 yards across all handicaps. By handicap it runs from 239 for a 0.0 to 4.9 to 176 for a 30+. A 10.0 to 14.9 handicap in his 50s averages 220.

How far should a 60-year-old hit a driver?

Men in their 60s average 206 yards and women in their 60s average 158. The spread by handicap is wide: 227 to 165 for men, 184 to 127 for women. Find your handicap row in the tables above rather than relying on the age average.

How much distance do golfers lose with age?

For men, Arccos reports an average of 240 yards at 15 to 19 and 190 in the 70s, a drop of 50 yards or 24.7%. For women the average goes from 201 in the 20s to 158 in the 60s, 43 yards or 27.2%.

What is the average driving distance for a woman?

Arccos lists 176.2 yards for women across all ages and handicaps. The same report lists 224.1 yards for men.

Does handicap matter more than age?

In these tables, both move the number a lot. A 30+ handicap man in his 20s averages 193 yards, which is less than a 0.0 to 4.9 man in his 70s at 209. Across all ages, Arccos puts 0.0 to 4.9 men 63 yards ahead of 30+ men, and the age gap from the teens to the 70s is 50 yards.

Are these carry distances or total distances?

Total distances, carry plus roll, on driver tee shots on par 4s and par 5s. Arccos does not adjust for weather, turf or elevation, so a launch monitor carry number will read shorter.
