Golf Ball Speed Chart: Swing Speed to Ball Speed, and Why the Numbers Disagree

Ball speed is your club speed times how well you hit it. That part is simple. The averages people quote for it are not, and two of the most-copied tables online are ten miles an hour apart.

The short answer

Ball speed = club speed × smash factor. TrackMan's own data puts the average male golfer (a 14.5 handicap) at 94 mph club speed, 133 mph ball speed and a 1.44 smash factor, each published as its own average. A PGA Tour player is at 115, 171 and 1.49. If you know your club speed, multiply by 1.44 and you have a fair guess at your ball speed. If you have a launch monitor, the number to look at first is the smash factor, because that is the part you can change this afternoon.

Search for a ball speed chart and you get a stack of tables that all look authoritative and do not agree with each other. One says a man in his twenties swings at 113 mph. The next says 95 to 105. Both cite "TrackMan data." Near the top of the results, as I write this, is a Facebook post of a distance chart with no units on it, and the comments underneath are people pointing that out.

The arithmetic is the same everywhere. The published figures are not, so they are below, side by side, with their sources and dates. Most of the disagreements are not errors. They are different years, different definitions, or different populations being averaged.

Smash factor bands are TrackMan's published Combine averages: 1.43 for a bogey golfer, 1.44 for the average golfer, 1.45 at 5 to 10 handicap, 1.49 for scratch and for the PGA Tour. The theoretical ceiling for a conforming driver is about 1.50. Nothing you type here is stored or sent anywhere.

Each row multiplies a club speed by three smash factors: 1.40 for a thin or heel strike, 1.44 for TrackMan's average-golfer figure, and 1.49 for a tour-quality strike. Find your club speed and read across. The spread between the columns is what a good strike is worth at your speed.

At 95 mph, the difference between a poor strike and a tour strike is about eight and a half miles an hour of ball speed. TrackMan puts a mile an hour of ball speed at up to two yards of driver distance, and Foresight uses the same two yards for carry, so that is around seventeen yards from the same swing. The columns get further apart as you go down the table, which is why strike quality matters more, not less, as you get faster.

The computed table above is only as good as the smash factor you pick. Here are the measured averages, by handicap, from the TrackMan Combine. These are the rows most "average golfer" figures online are traced back to, usually without saying so.

Notice what the smash column does. From bogey golfer to scratch it moves from 1.43 to 1.49. That is six hundredths, and it is worth about six miles an hour of ball speed at a 100 mph swing. The club speed column moves eighteen miles an hour over the same span. So the honest reading is that better players are mostly faster, and a little bit cleaner. Strike is not the whole story, but it is the part that does not need a gym.

Foresight Sports publishes a near-identical set in its own article on ball speed: 133 mph for the average man, 147 at 5 handicap, 111 for the average woman. It does not say where the figures came from. They match TrackMan's Combine rows to the mile an hour, which tells you how few independent measurements are actually behind all the charts in circulation.

If you have seen a tour average of 113 mph club speed and 167 mph ball speed, that is also TrackMan. It is the older sheet, the one that circulated as a PDF from about 2019 and is still reproduced on many pages, sometimes labelled as current-season data. TrackMan updated its tour averages in May 2024 with the 2023 season, and the newer articles give 115 and 171.

Neither is wrong. The tour got faster and lower-spinning, and the older numbers stayed on the internet. The tell is the launch angle: 10.9 degrees is the old sheet, 10.4 is the new one. If a page shows 113 and 167 and calls it this year's data, it has copied the old sheet.

A 113 mph twenty-something is faster than TrackMan's scratch-golfer average of 110. Golf Sidekick attributes its figures to TPI's 50th percentile; Up Your Club says only "Trackman or Foresight data." Neither table says who was measured, and neither was measured on you. The age tables are the least useful numbers on this page. TrackMan's handicap rows are at least a named, measured population, and a radar beats both.

The CeilingWhere "1.50" comes from

Every launch monitor maker tells you to aim for a smash factor of 1.50 with the driver. TrackMan says "near 1.50." Foresight calls 1.5 "the gold standard." Neither explains the number.

The USGA limits how springy a driver face can be. The limit is usually quoted as a coefficient of restitution of 0.830, though the test today is a characteristic-time measurement rather than a direct COR reading. Tom Wishon, the clubmaker, worked the physics through and put the highest smash factor a conforming head can produce at about 1.495; the exact figure moves a little with head weight and loft. That is why the tour average sits at 1.48 to 1.49 and not higher: the best players in the world are hitting the face about as efficiently as the rule allows.

So a smash factor above 1.50 on your launch monitor is a measurement, not an achievement. One of the two speeds was misread, and club speed is the looser of the two on consumer radars. Garmin's own specification for the Approach R10 gives ball speed accuracy of plus or minus 1 mph; the club speed tolerance of plus or minus 3 mph comes from MyGolfSimulator's table of Garmin's spec sheet. Three miles an hour of club speed error at 95 mph is about 0.05 of smash factor on its own. A reading of 1.52 is a reason to distrust the club speed, not evidence that you beat the USGA.

The useful part of smash factor is the other direction. If you are swinging at 95 and your smash is 1.38, that is a strike problem, and it is worth about ten miles an hour of ball speed.

The Other QuestionHow far that goes, and why those charts disagree too

Ball speed is what the launch monitor makers measure. Distance is what golfers ask about, and the distance averages have their own disagreement, for a different reason: they are measuring different things.

Arccos also breaks its number down, and the spread is the point. Its 2026 report has men with a handicap of 0.0 to 4.9 averaging 244 yards and men at 30 or above averaging 181, a 63-yard gap. The overall men's average, it says, has moved by less than a yard since 2018. By age, men 15 to 19 average 240 and men in their seventies 190. Those are totals with roll, on real fairways, so they run longer than a carry number off a launch monitor. If your radar says you carry 205 and Arccos says your handicap band drives 224, you are not nineteen yards short. You are comparing carry to total.

Your Own NumberGetting a club speed you can trust

The only row that matters is yours, and the cheapest way to get it is a swing speed radar. The PRGR HS-130A reads club speed and ball speed and nothing else, which is exactly the two numbers this page is about. It will not give you spin or launch, and it does not need to.

A step up is a radar that also reads launch and spin, which is where the tolerances start to matter. Garmin's specification for the R10 gives plus or minus 1 mph on ball speed, MyGolfSimulator's table of the same sheet gives plus or minus 3 mph on club speed, and below 90 mph of ball speed the R10's spin figure is calculated rather than measured. Rapsodo, for the MLM2PRO, publishes an accuracy claim for spin with its marked balls but no ball-speed tolerance that we could find. Bushnell publishes no tolerance figures on the Launch Pro's product page, though the device is built on Foresight's camera system and reviewers put its ball speed within a mile an hour of TrackMan. Whatever you use, take ten drives, throw out the best and the worst, and average the rest. One swing is not a club speed. And write down the smash factor next to it. That is the number you will actually work on.

Club speed decides more than ball speed. What is a good ball speed for a driver?

TrackMan's Combine averages put a 10 handicap at 138 mph, a 5 handicap at 147, and a scratch golfer at 161. The average male golfer is 133, the average female golfer around 111. The PGA Tour average is 171. Past 147 you are ahead of TrackMan's 5-handicap average.

How do I convert swing speed to ball speed?

Multiply club speed by smash factor. The average golfer's smash factor with a driver is 1.44 in TrackMan's data, so 100 mph of club speed is about 144 mph of ball speed. A well-struck drive is closer to 1.49, which gives 149 from the same swing.

Why do the tour averages online say 113 and 167, and TrackMan says 115 and 171?

Both are TrackMan. The 113 and 167 figures come from an older sheet, in circulation since about 2019, that many sites still reproduce. TrackMan's 2023-season update, published in 2024, gives 115 and 171. The launch angle is the giveaway: 10.9 degrees is the old sheet, 10.4 the new one.

Is a smash factor of 1.50 possible?

Just about, and not beyond it, with a conforming driver. The USGA's 0.830 coefficient of restitution limit puts the ceiling at roughly 1.495 according to Tom Wishon's working. Readings above 1.50 on a consumer radar usually mean the club speed was read low, since club speed tolerances are looser than ball speed tolerances.

How many yards is one mile an hour of ball speed?

TrackMan says gaining 1 mph of ball speed can add up to 2 yards of driver distance; Foresight puts it at two yards of carry. It is a rule of thumb for driver, not a law, and it assumes launch and spin stay roughly where they were.

What swing speed should I have for my age?

The published age tables disagree by more than 10 mph for the same age group, because they average different populations. Your handicap is a better predictor: TrackMan's data puts a 10 handicap at 95 mph, a 15 handicap at about 94, and scratch at 110. A radar is better still.
