Hybrid and Fairway Wood Loft Chart by Number

A 4-hybrid is not the same club at every maker. Here are the published lofts and lengths for hybrids and fairway woods, side by side, by club number.

The number on a hybrid or fairway wood tells you where it sits in that maker's lineup, not how many degrees of loft it has. A 3-hybrid is 18 degrees at one maker and 20 at another. The tables below put the makers' own published specs next to each other so you can compare by loft.

Each cell shows the stock loft, then the standard length. A dash means the maker does not list that number.

Callaway lists two 5-hybrids, one at 24 degrees and one at 26. Cleveland also lists a 3+ hybrid-wood at 18 degrees and 41.5 inches. PING, Callaway and Cobra hybrids have adjustable hosels, so the loft on your own club can sit a degree or two off these stock numbers.

Reading ItWhere the numbers split

The 3-hybrid is 18 degrees at Cleveland, 19 at Callaway, Cobra and Srixon, and 20 at PING.

The 4-hybrid is 21 at Cleveland, 22 at Callaway, Cobra and Srixon, and 23 at PING. PING's 4-hybrid has more loft than every other 4-hybrid in the grid.

The 5-hybrid runs from 24 degrees at Cleveland (and one of Callaway's two) up to 26 at PING and Callaway's second version.

Lengths follow the same pattern. At every maker in the grid, the length drops as the number goes up.

The 3-wood and 7-wood agree across the board at 15 and 21 degrees. The 5-wood does not: PING's is 19 degrees, the others are 18.

Srixon notes that it now measures fairway wood length the way the USGA and R&A guidelines describe, which makes its published lengths about a quarter inch longer than before even though the clubs did not change. So lengths from different makers, or different years, may not be measured the same way.

TitleistTitleist lists degrees, not numbers

Titleist's GT hybrids are published as a list of lofts with matching lengths, so they do not fit the number grid above.

Using ItHow to shop by loft, not by number

Start with the loft of the club you want to replace or fill in around. It is usually stamped on the sole or listed on the maker's spec page.

Then look for the hybrid or wood with the nearest loft, whatever number it carries. A 22-degree hybrid is a 4-hybrid at Callaway, Cobra and Srixon, but PING's 3-hybrid is 20 and its 4-hybrid is 23.

Loft ladder of fairway woods and hybrids Stock lofts across the makers in the grids, lowest to highest. 3-wood 15 degrees, 2-hybrid 17, 5-wood 18 to 19, 3-hybrid 18 to 20, 7-wood 21, 4-hybrid 21 to 23, 9-wood 24, 5-hybrid 24 to 26, 6-hybrid 27 to 30. The 3-hybrid overlaps the 5-wood, the 4-hybrid overlaps the 7-wood and the 5-hybrid overlaps the 9-wood. A dashed line marks a 22 degree iron, which falls inside the 4-hybrid range. Stock loft, in degrees 15° 18° 21° 24° 27° 30° 3-wood 15° 2-hybrid 17° 5-wood 18 to 19° 3-hybrid 18 to 20° 7-wood 21° 4-hybrid 21 to 23° 9-wood 24° 5-hybrid 24 to 26° 6-hybrid 27 to 30° Fairway wood Hybrid Wood and hybrid share this loft A 22° iron: the 4-hybrid at Callaway, Cobra and Srixon
Each hybrid overlaps a fairway wood in loft, so a 3-hybrid, 4-hybrid and 5-hybrid sit on the same rungs as a 5-wood, 7-wood and 9-wood, and a 22 degree iron lands inside the 4-hybrid range (bars span the lofts across the makers in the grids).

Check the clubs on either side too. You want steps between clubs that feel even, and a bag mixed from several makers can leave a gap or a doubled-up loft. The loft chart and gap checker is built for that.

Rule of thumb for swapping an iron for a hybrid. This is based on loft, not on maker data: find the loft stamped on the iron you are replacing and pick the hybrid closest to it. Say the iron is 22 degrees. A 22-degree hybrid covers the same loft, and at Callaway, Cobra and Srixon that is the 4-hybrid. If the iron's loft falls between two hybrids, look at the gaps to the clubs above and below before you choose.

PING does publish its own pairing. Its G440 hybrid page lists each hybrid next to an equivalent iron: the 2-hybrid with a 2-iron, the 3-hybrid with a 3-iron, and so on up to the 7-hybrid with a 7-iron. It also pairs the 2-, 3- and 4-hybrid with a 5-, 7- and 9-wood. That pairing goes by number and covers PING's own clubs.

Common MistakesWhat trips people up

Matching by number across makers. Swapping a PING 4-hybrid for a Callaway 4-hybrid changes the loft, as the grid shows.

Forgetting the adjustable hosel. If your club has a sleeve, the loft you play may not be the stock one. Check what it is set to.

Doubling up lofts. A 9-wood at PING or Callaway is 24 degrees, which is also the loft of Callaway's 24-degree 5-hybrid and Cleveland's 5-hybrid. Two clubs at the same loft do much the same job.

Treating published length as exact. It is a standard build. PING, for example, bases its fairway lengths on one specific shaft, so a different shaft or a custom build can change it.

FAQQuick answers

What loft is a 4-hybrid?

It depends on the maker. In the grid it is 21 degrees at Cleveland, 22 at Callaway, Cobra and Srixon, and 23 at PING.

What loft is a 3-hybrid?

18 degrees at Cleveland, 19 at Callaway, Cobra and Srixon, and 20 at PING.

What loft is a 5-wood?

18 degrees at Callaway, Cobra and Srixon, and 19 at PING.

Is a 7-wood the same loft everywhere?

In this grid, yes. PING, Callaway, Cobra and Srixon all list the 7-wood at 21 degrees.

Do hybrids get shorter as the number goes up?

Yes, at every maker in the grid. The 2-hybrid is the longest and the highest-numbered hybrid is the shortest.

Why does Callaway list two 5-hybrids?

Callaway's Elyte hybrid page shows a 5-hybrid at 24 degrees and another at 26, both at the same standard length.
